Tofino Liquid Waste Management

The environmental issues and federal regulations necessitate the installation of a secondary treatment for wastewater discharge into the ocean in the District of Tofino. WSP undertook the task of determining the location and treatment criteria for a wastewater treatment facility and outfall to meet the above issues. A part of the Work included the designing of a modern conveyance as well as a wastewater treatment plant.

Integral Engineering as the structural design team for WSP, designed the structures of the conveyance system, as well as the wastewater treatment plant based on the architectural design which is artfully completed by “Feenstra Architecture Inc.” and process, mechanical and electrical requirements. All structures are considered post disaster for this project.

The conveyance system includes several pumphouse and lift stations, mostly underground reinforced concrete chambers, designed as water retaining post disaster structures.

The wastewater treatment plant includes a 12.5 m x 7.5 m x 11 m height two-story reinforced concrete dewatering building, a 15 m x 14 m x 10 m height two-story reinforced concrete headworks building, a 31 m x 22.5 m x 10 m height two-story reinforced concrete mechanical building, two 16 m diameter x 5.5 m deep half buried secondary clarifier tanks, a double cell 56 m long x 30 m wide x 5.5 m deep half buried oxidation ditches, a 17 m x 10 m two-story timber administration and lab building and numerous auxiliary structures and heavy machinery foundations.
